We Three Kings

In Christian tradition the Magi (Greek: μάγοι, magoi), Three Wise Men, Three Kings or Kings from the East are said to have visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts. They are mentioned only in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 2) , which says that they came "from the east to Jerusalem" to worship the Christ, "born King of the Jews". Because three gifts were recorded, there are traditionally said to have been three Magi, though Matthew does not specify their number. Upon meeting Jesus, the Magi are described as handing over gifts and "falling down" in joyous praise. (Wikipedia)

What were these gifts and what did they symbolism ?

These gifts were ordinary gifts for a king but they were prophetic gifts for the King of Kings.

Let's discuss these gifts in class.

Why Us ?

The Shepherds and the Angels

Luke 2:8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 "Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Why the shepherds ?

What made them important enough to be the first to hear the news ?

Let's talk about it Sunday.

Why Me ?

As the father of two girls I often wonder what Mary the mother of Jesus had to endure as she carried the Savior of the world in her womb. The young girl's life must have been full of stress as she received the gift from God for this sinful world. Why me must have been the question she asked herself.

This week I want us to look at some words I found to describe what Mary had to go through as she was choosing to be the mother of Jesus.

Pledged
Virgin
Troubled
Believer
Truth seeker
Humble
Cherished
Lawful
Loving Mother

As we read we will find other words that will describe the most famous mother whoever lived.

I will see you Sunday.

After The Leftovers

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. The food was great. The weather was beautiful. The break from work was fantastic. The entertainment was interesting as my 94 year old grandmother sang to us hymns after lunch.

Now our thoughts turn back to the norm. Work, ballgames, meetings and our daily lives will fill our time. Will I remember to thank God for these things that fill my life? Will I remember to turn to him for my needs? Will I remember Thanksgiving after the leftovers are gone ?

In class we will listen to a prayer from David thanking God for never letting him down. This is a heart felt prayer of thanksgiving. I just hope I can learn from his example.

See you in class.

All In The Family

As we prepare for Thanksgiving our thoughts turn to our families. This Thursday many of us will pass the sweet potatoes or turkey to someone in our family. We will laugh at some members for something funny they said and hug some we have not seen in a while. Many of us will share how we have been blessed during the last year.

David has some family troubles this week. Rape and murder plague his home. We will see a true dysfunctional family because God is not invited to their Thanksgiving meal.

As we share a meal with our families this week let's remember how blessed we are to have them. Also remember to invite God to your family gathering.

The Tangled Webs We Weave

In Proverbs 6 we read:

16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:

17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

" The Lord hates " are strong words. Surely I am not guilty of any of these sins.

This week we will read about the sins of David as he lust after his neighbor. God hated what David did and made him pay a high price for these sins.

I may not have shed innocent blood but I have said hurtful words to people. I know I have not started a riot but I have pasted along information that may have made one think less of someone else.

Does God hate these actions ?

If He does am I any different in my actions than David ?

This lesson has humbled me greatly. See you in class.

Your Call Is Calling

This week the unemployment rate hit a 14 year high at 6.5%. In the month of October 240,000 people lost their jobs. When is the last time you have thanked God for your job? I know sometimes I take my job for granted.

This week God lets King David know that He (God) is the boss. He also promises David a great future with the company if He (God) remains as the boss.

How can we keep God as the boss at our work place ?

God can use us in great ways at our jobs if we let Him.

Hope to see you in class.

Pray For Uncle Sam

The life of every citizen will be impacted by our upcoming elections. This election will see the greatest number of voters ever. As you know there is a great deal at stake for each of us. Regardless of the winner, we as citizens must pray for our elected officials.

Ten Ways To Pray For People In Leadership -

Pray that:

1. they be granted wisdom, knowledge, and understanding ( Jas 1:5)
2. they recognize their own inadequacy and seek the will of God ( Prov 3:5-8 )
3. they be convicted of sin ( John 8:1-9 )
4. they respect authority and practice accountability ( Rom 13:1-7 )
5. they be honest and faithful to spouses and children ( Mal 2: 15-16 )
6. they be timely, reliable, and dependable ( Mt 21: 28-31 )
7. they desire honesty, integrity, and loyalty ( Prov 11:3 )
8. they endeavor to restore the sanctity of life and family ( Eph 5:21-6:4 )
9. they desire humility and meekness ( Titus 3: 1-2 )
10. they be prepared to give account to God ( Heb 9:27 )

See you in class.

Following God's Agenda

An agenda is the set of goals of an ideological group. I use an agenda to get a certain task completed. Sometimes however we have to change our agenda in order to complete the task. Also it is difficult to follow another one's agenda. I believe God has an agenda for each of us and I believe we often find it difficult to follow His agenda.

This week we will see two agendas. One is for Saul and the other is for David. We will also see that Saul has to change to conform to God's agenda.

Does God have an agenda for us ?

What is that agenda ?

How do we conform to God's agenda ?

It should be a healthy discussion. See you in class.

The Worth Of Friendship

What is Christian friendship worth ? As I write this blog I am remembering the times when Christian friends helped me. Friends have stood by me during my hospital stays, my job changes, the loss of family members, and the headaches of leadership positions that I have held. My friends tell me when I do a good job and also when I screw up things. My friends love me when it is hard to be loved. A good Christian friend is priceless.

David had a friend that was priceless to him. We will read that this friend loved him deeply and saved his life. We will also read that this friend sacrificed his future for this friendship.

What kind of friend are you ?

Have you ever sacrificed something for your friend ?

Has your friend ever sacrificed something for you ?

Thank you for allowing us to meet in the pray garden this morning. You all are good friends to me.

Dealing With Disappointment

Have you ever been disappointed ? There have been times in my life where my plans just did not work out. I would ask , "Where did I go wrong?" . I did not get that job I really wanted or a relationship went sour. Sometimes we even slide into a state of depression because of this disappointment. How do we deal with this disappointment ?

This week Saul enters into a state of depression . Because of his sin God replaces him as king . God's new choice as king is the son of Jesse , David .

How do we deal with disappointment ?

How can we trust God to keep hope alive ?

Let's join together in class to discuss this important subject.

Follow The Instructions

Do you like to follow instructions? I must say I do not like to follow instructions. When we buy something that needs to be put together I look at the pictures. For some reason there are always parts left over. I should start my own hardware store with the extra parts I have from Christmas toys.

As king God gave Saul instructions to follow. Because of fear and impatiences Saul elects not to follow these instructions. Saul will lose his kingship as a punishment.

Does God give us instructions to follow ?

Is it hard to follow these instructions ?

Do we sometimes have parts left over ?

See you Sunday.

Be Careful What You Ask For

It has been a scary week in the financial world. Some of the nations largest bank are having problems and even some have gone under. What has brought the country to it's knees was the easy access the credit. Loans were granted to people who could not afford the monthly payments. As a banker this concerns me greatly.

This week we will learn that the people of Israel have ask for a king. This was not God's plan, He wanted to be their only King but He granted this pray. We will see that this prayer was not in the best interest of the people.

We need to be careful what we ask for. God may just answer our prayers.

See you in church.

Serving the Lord Faithfully

"Iron-Man" Stan, "Flash" Forrester, myself along with others participated in the 5K Cotton Picking Race that began and ended from our church parking lot on Saturday. Although it was hot, it was fun. There even were some babies who rolled across the finish line in their strollers. Each runner, walker, and roller finished the race.

As I studied this week's lesson I was reminded of this race. Serving the Lord is a race. Some of us run, some of us walk and even some of us are pushed. Samuel begins a race to serve the Lord. God called him to the starting line and said Ready, Set, Go.

How do we prepare for the race in service to God ?

How can we improve ourselves for this race ?

This should be a good study.

P.S. My race name was "Slug" and my job was to show the other runners where the church bathrooms were located.
See you in class.

God's Grace

As I write this blog Tropical Storm Hanna began a rain-swept march up the U.S. Atlantic coast. Little to no damage has been reported. The word Hanna mean "God's Grace". What started as a menacing storm just blessed an area of the country with much needed rain.

In today's lesson we see God's grace towards another Hanna. She could not have a child. After many tears and much prayer "God's Grace" blessed this Hanna with a child.

What is grace ?

Why is grace important ?

This should be a very interesting lesson. FYI The next storm is named "Ike" which means "God's Strength". Makes you think.

Dealing With Limitations

We deal with limitations each day. I cannot type very fast. In fact it will take it about one hour to type this short blog page. My job requires me to type a great deal, so my day is full of hunting and pecking.

When it comes to sharing your faith do you have limitations ? I have many. This week we will see some limitations that Paul had to endure. Paul overcame this limitations with God's help.

What are your limitations ?

How do we overcome these limitations ?

How can we help others with their limitations ?

See you in class.

When The Whole World Is Against You

Have you ever felt that the only friend you have in the world is your dog ? You go to work and someone there has just made you fell six inches tall or a group of your co-workers will not speak to you. At the same time, there may not be harmony in your family. Sometimes you feel alone and you are not sure what you did to deserve this treatment.

This week the world is against Paul. He went to share the Word and for this he gained many enemies. They hated Paul for sharing the truth.

How do we deal with a world that is so evil ?

How do we deal with a person that hates us ?

How do we deal with a friend that dislikes us ?

We have all been there. Lets talk about it.

How To Handle Criticism

"Criticism is something we can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing." Aristotle. There is much truth to that quote. Sometimes it is hard for us to handle criticism the right way. We get our feeling hurt. I know it is hard for me because I want everyone to like me. The reality is, we need criticism. When done correctly it makes us better.

This week Paul is criticized by the people of Jerusalem. We will see how he handles this criticism.

What are some basic reasons that unbelievers criticize those who follow Christ ?

What are some basic reasons that our fellow church members criticize each other ?

What can be done to counter unfair criticism ?

Lord, we can't see each wrong we do,
So send us help from Christians who
Will notice faults we do not see
And tell us of them tactfully. —Branon

Bring your thinking caps to class.

For I Am With You

On February 27, the newly-elected president of the Balaghat Christian Association was beaten for providing legal help to victims of an earlier Hindu extremist attack on February 22. According to Compass Direct News, “Members of the Hindu extremist group, Bajrang Dal allegedly targeted Dr. Robin Singh, a medical doctor and Christian leader, because he had provided legal and administrative help to Tom George, Sunil Lal and others who had been dragged from a Lent meeting and beaten with bamboo poles, sticks, rods and other weapons. They struck him with their fists and wooden sticks, as well as kicked him, to deftly give him internal injuries.” Pray for believers injured in both attacks. Also pray believers will forgive their persecutors.( Crosswalk.com)

As I studied for today's lesson, I wondered how I would be attacked today for being a christian. It is going to be hot and crowded in class. I be will rushed to get the announcements right. Church will be full and I may lose my favorite seat. It is going to cost me a lot of money to come to church tonight for the services because of gas prices.

Are we at First Baptist Church in Somerville being attacked for being Christians ?

If we are not being attacked are we doing a good job being Christians ?

Let's talk in class about Christian persecutions.

To An Unknown God

In the days after George W. Bush's 2004 reelection, political analysts highlighted the Democratic Party's failure to speak the language of faith in a way that resonated with American voters, particularly Protestant evangelicals. This disconnect was partly due to substantial differences on hot-button social issues, but more from the perception that the Democratic Party was indifferent or hostile to genuine, serious, heartfelt religion. Pundits argued that candidates who ignored religion did so at their own peril. So Democratic strategists began "finding" or "recovering" faith, while Republicans simply tried to keep it.

It was natural, then, for candidates' religion to become a major theme this primary season. From Mitt Romney's Mormonism to Barack Obama's African American Christianity, each candidate's faith was proclaimed in stump speeches or examined by the press. But instead of providing the promised boost, religion became a liability, and candidates have expended as much energy divorcing themselves from religious connections as they have making them. What happened?

This year's primaries suggest a new truism about American political campaigning: While generic religiosity brings life, particular religious connections risk political death—or serious injury. Religious particularity arguably killed Romney's campaign. At the very least, it didn't help his cause. The same could be said of Mike Huckabee. While his evangelical pedigree as a Southern Baptist minister appealed to some voters, it scared even more. And the persistence and potency of the Jeremiah Wright controversy put Obama's campaign in the ER. Amputation was the only remedy. Even John McCain, who is generally mum on religion, had to sever himself from pastors Rod Parsley and John Hagee.

In a pluralistic religious environment, showing your cards—or creeds—can be a bad move politically. Identifying particular religious commitments or accepting pastor endorsements may bring candidates closer to a narrow slice of voters, but it often distances them from even more Americans. *(From Christianity Today )

What is the duty of a Christian in today's politcally enviroment ?

See you in class.

Rediscovering God In America

As I get older, I start to wonder what kind of country America will be in 10, 25, or 50 years. I remember our first TV and the three black and white channels we could receive. Do you remember The Andy Griffin Show before reruns? The Sunday drives our family would take would lead us to far away lands such as Moscow or Rossville. Then after a week of getting prepared we would drive to Memphis for our semi-annual shopping trip. Everyone would stand as the national anthem was sang followed by a prayer at every high school ballgame in our country. Times have changed.

Peter Moffit shared with me a DVD by InTouch Ministries titled Rediscovering God In America by Newt Gingrich. This Sunday I would like to share it with you. We will be reminded how God has blessed America.

I pray that America will rediscover God and times will once again change to the way it was when I was a kid.

Beware !! Sheep In Wolf's Clothing

I read about a revival that is being held in Lakeland Florida. After some research I found some disturbing facts about this revival. The pastor is healing (?) people, asking the crowd to worship angels, and raising dead people (?). What is going on ? What are the people of Lakeland looking for ? Is Satan turning this revival towards him ? Sadly I think that is what is happening.

Paul and Barnabas go to a town to preach and they get more than they bargain for. The people were looking for false gods. Some even thought Barnabas was Zeus.

Why is it so easy for people to stray from the truth ?

How can the church be guarded from being lead astray ?

We must be very careful what we look for. We must seek the true God and not listen to false teachers.

Help Me Set The Table

I spent my holiday on the seat of a tractor in the hay field. One can solve many of the world's problems from the seat of a tractor. I enjoy working in the hay field as we gather food for our cows to help them live through a long cold winter.

During the winter as the cows hear the sounds of the tractor, they know that food is on the way. They gather around the hay rings waiting for a bale to be dropped. After a day that bale has been eaten and they await another.

This week we are going to see God showing Peter that the good news is for all people not just the Jews. We need to set the table for all who are hungry.

Do we prepare enough food for all that are hungry ?

Do we set enough places at the table ?

The only way our cows could survive the winter is hay that we prepare for them. The only way that some in this world can survive is that we feed them the word. Let us set the table.

See you in Sunday School !

A Birthday Wish

As our country prepares to celebrate yet another birthday, I am deeply saddened by a news article I read on the MSNBC website : "America remains a nation of believers, but a new survey finds most Americans don't feel their religion is the only way to eternal life — even if their faith tradition teaches otherwise."

What a sad statement about the country that God has blessed with so much. Could you imagine the men like Washington or Jefferson saying you can go to heaven if you believe in Buddha or Allah.

So as we blow the candles out, let us make a birthday wish that all find the true path to heaven through Jesus Christ.

Happy July 4th !!!!

The Chicken And The Pig

I love to eat a big breakfast. Every Saturday morning my brother and I meet at my parent's house to eat breakfast with them. After my dad's heart attack mother cooked healthier. Sometimes it was hard to choke down turkey bacon and fake eggs. Thank goodness the health thing is over. I get to eat a real meal now. Eggs and bacon garnish my plate early Saturday mornings just like God had commanded. ( I think that is a commandment ). If you think about bacon and eggs, the chicken participated but the pig was totally committed to the meal.

This week we are going to see a man named Saul whose life changed while he was on the job. After that change Saul became totally committied to work for Jesus. He did not just particpate as I do sometimes.

Are you committed or do you participate. I must say sometimes I find myself just participating far too many times.

Today's questions:

Are you a chicken or a pig ?

If you are a chicken, how do you become a pig ?

See you in Church !!!!!

Thanks Dee For This Email

A message every adult should read, because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking , I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don't.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked at you and wanted to say, 'Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.'

I AM SENDING THIS TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE I KNOW WHO DO SO MUCH FOR OTHERS AND THINK NO ONE EVER SEES .

LITTLE EYES SEE A LOT !

Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher or friend) influence the life of a child. How will you touch the life of someone today?

God Bless You

Look, Here Is Water

Have you ever been excited about something ? I mean really excited about something. As most of you know I love to duck hunt. After weeks of preparing; cleaning my gun, many trips to Bass Pro, working my dog and entertaining my family with a finely tuned duck call, the day finally comes. With plans to get to bed early for a good night's sleep, I lay down and close my eyes. After about 3 hours of no sleep I get up and watch TV for the rest of the night. I LOVE IT !!! I know I am weird.

I am sorry to say I don't remember if I have ever lost sleep because of an excitement to do God's work. Why is that? I love God. I love to work for him. I love the people who work hand in hand with me for God. Where is that losing sleep excitement?

This week we are going to see the excitement of two men. One is good and one not so good. One is directed in the right direction the other in a wrong direction. Both were excited about doing to work for the Lord.

How can we direct our excitement for God in the right direction?

It should be a good class discussion.

See you in class.

A Father's Love Letter

The Boldness Of A Dad

Happy Father's Day. Many of us are blessed to still have our father with us. For me it is a joy to see Mr. Royce so happy to be part of this church and worshiping with me. Some of us have lost our father and they await in heaven to join with us again. Today I want us to discuss what it takes to be a bold Christian dad.

The lesson is about a first-generation believer who modeled what it means to be a bold Christian. Stephen is widely identified as the first Christian martyr. We will be challenged to recognize in Stephen a boldness worth following as a Christian dad. We will see his life as an encouragement to demonstrate courage and confidence when we declare as dads our Christian beliefs and values.

Faithful
Full Of Grace
Wise
Truthful
Set Apart
Obedient
Humble
Prayerful
Forgiving

Think about how we all can be better parents and exhibit boldness in our Christian living.

See you Sunday.

When They Heard This Sound, A Crowd Came Together In Bewilderment

The photos were taken during several flights over one of the most remote parts of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil's Acre region.

They show tribe members outside thatched huts, surrounded by the dense jungle, pointing bows and arrows up at the camera.

"We did the overflight to show their houses, to show they are there, to show they exist," the group quoted Jose Carlos dos Reis Meirelles Junior, an official in the Brazilian government's Indian affairs department, as saying.

"This is very important because there are some who doubt their existence."

This week we are going to study the start of the church. I wonder what those early Baptist thought on The Day of Pentecost as this new church began. "Is it worth dying for" must have been one of the most asked questions of the day.

What is the purpose of First Baptist Church of Somerville ?

What is God's call to the church ?

Just like the this tribe in Brazil, do people doubt that we exist ?

I pray that we have a good discussion on the state of the church. God keep you safe until we meet in Sunday School.

Old Faithful

Back in the summer of 1983 I had the opportunity to go to Yellowstone National Park for a fraternity meeting. Keith Fowler and I were able to visit the famous "Old Faithful Geyser". The fact that hot water was shooting out of the ground was interesting. However what I found to be more interesting was that with an error of 10 minutes, Old Faithful will erupt 65 minutes after an eruption lasting less than 2.5 minutes or 92 minutes after an eruption lasting more than 2.5 minutes. Now that is reliability.

We are entering time of year where reliability to our church becomes a precious commodity. With summer activities, vacations, camps and ballgames, one finds it hard to be faithful to our church. I think Gods understands that we need some time for family and ourselves. He knows that we need to be renewed.

Before Jacob died he was promised by his sons that they would take him home to be buried with his father and grandfather. Jacob trusted on the reliability of his sons to take him home and they complied with his request.

What does God ask of us the church ?

Do you see yourself as being reliable to the church and to God ?

How can we balance our time and the time we give to the church ?

It should be a good lesson !!!

See you church.

A Season Of Prayer

We have many of our church family and friends who are in the hospital or under a doctor's care. Thank you so much for standing in the gap with prayer and support for our church family. Indeed satan will try to use this time of stress to pull us from God. If there was ever a time for the church to pray it is now !!!

A Change Of Address

High Schools over all the country are celebrating graduations. I remember the year 1981 as I finished my high school career. ( I know, I am getting old. ) I thought I was the big fish in the small pond. What more could there be to life ? Not until I went to college did I realize that I was really the little guppy in the big ocean. I was in store for some big changes !!!!

This week in our lesson Joseph brings his family to Egypt. The famine will last for five more years and the only way for Jacob to survive will be for him to have a change of address. While in Egypt Jacob sees his son Joseph and falls under the watch care of the Pharaoh. With this move God begins to build his people.

Are we preparing our children for their move to college ?

What is college like now ?

What will college be like in five to ten years ?

Will our kids seek God while in college ?

These are question I find myself asking more and more.

I am very proud of the students who are preparing for the next phase of their lives. We as a church need to pray are all our students as they walk down life's path.

See you in Sunday School

Means To An End

In the city, the term "means to an end" refers to any action which the sole purpose of is to achieve something else. On the farm, the term "means to an end" refers to there is nothing I can do about it so let's just pray things work out. I have said that many times when it seems that the world is a big bad dog and I am wearing milk bone pants.

This week Joseph tells his brothers he is alive and well. All that Joseph endured at the hands of his brother's jealousy is over and God plan for Joseph's family is about to be revealed. The means to the end is that God had a plan for Joseph and he was blessed.

What can we do to keep the faith that God will take care of us ?

How can I trust that things will work out ?

How can I help others with their problems ?

God has a plan for us. We must pray thru the means to see the end.

How Big Is God ?

I was asked to go look at a farm that one of my friends wanted to buy. I said sure then he said let's take my airplane. I must say it has been some time since I have been in a small airplane. As we climbed to 1500 feet, I thought to myself how big our God must be. I looked across the horizon to see trees, lakes and fields of green wheat. Just think, all of what I saw could easily fit in the palm of His hand. It does make you think how big God is and how small I am.

The picture is of Ellis' house from 1650 feet.

The Hand Of God

As I watched the news, I was amazed at the destruction from the tornadoes this week in Virginia. Cars were tossed as if they were toys and buildings were completely destroyed. Thankfully there was no loss of life. God's hand of protection was on these people who were in the path of these storms just as it was on the students of Union several weeks ago.

Is God trying to show us something ?

Do you think the churches in Virginia will be full this Sunday ?

How long will they be full ?

I pray that we as a country will see that God is in control and He loves His people. Just maybe someone's life will be changed.

An Opened Door

Since I am a little slower and heavier than most boys my age, I get to "work the gate" on our cattle farm. Working the gate means that I stand and open the gate as cows or calves come by. This lets you separate one from the other. My dad and my brother, being a little faster on their feet than me, work the cows or calves toward the gate. As the animal goes towards the gate I will open it at the right time to let it into the next pen. The cow or calve will take the opportunity go through to opened gate.

This week we will see that God opened the door of opportunity for Joseph. After a long stay in jail Joseph gets out to help Egypt through bad times. He is rewarded for his wisdom. Joseph remembered that God blessed him with this wisdom.

Does God open doors of opportunity for us ?

Do we recognize when those doors are opened for us ?

How can we remember to thank God for opened doors ?

I went to see Matt and Candy today. He is able to stand up without the aid from someone. God thank you for bringing them home !!!

I will see you in Sunday School.

A Very Special Thanks

Our class has so many people who are very talented. Some we recognize and some go unrecognized. I want to thank Stephen Forrester for his fine work keeping all of us informed on the progress of Matt Kelley while he and his family were in Jackson. Many people came by the office and told me of the blessing they received by reading his blog. It was a great ministry for our class and church.

Again thanks Stephen.

An Email I Want To Share

A letter to Oprah posted this morning to her personal address.

***********************************************************************

Dear Oprah,

I realize that you won't be the first to read this, but I do hope it makes its way to your eyes and heart.

I hoped to tell you that your show has helped my daughter in many ways. I am very sorry to have to block the show in my home due to some disturbing information you are disseminating on who you think Jesus Christ is/was.

Like you I am a seeker. I took charge of my life, got an education, and I strive to constantly improve myself just as you teach your viewers. I made no effort to re-define God based on my new life. The freedom and privilege that come from success and money do not, in my mind, change who God is, was or the history of what really took place in His revealing of Himself to us.

The Course in Miracles you are promoting is a sadly convincing trap that will snare many simple minded and desperately searching people when you could so easily point them to a true solution to their suffering. The "slain Christ" does have meaning and has for thousands of years before you became "enlightened". That old rugged cross got me and thousands of others through crisis after crisis- again before your billion dollar media empire existed. Fortunately, someone influential in my life pointed me to the truth rather than some self-styled idea about who they decided to re-invent.

I implore you to re-think your actions and listen deeply to your heart and not to advisors that become abundant when you are notable. Your influence on this planet is great. Imagine if you take your "followers" down the wrong road due to inaccurate information. Teaching comes with a tremendous responsibility. Success doesn't make you right, or an expert on everything.

I doubt seriously you were taught these things as a young girl. I suppose rather they have come to you from advisors and interesting people that have influenced you along the way. In integrating these beliefs, you have abandoned your roots and attempted to re-define the One who created you . To this outside observer, you appear to be trying to take on God's role. That's been tried before and the world waits as that story plays itself out. Let him teach; you share His message. The consequences of your actions have dire ramifications for a lot of searching people.

Ms Winfrey, if you have indeed seen this for yourself, I want you to know that I will pray that the God you seem to have abandoned will find someone influential to you to show you that you are hurting rather than helping these souls and help you understand WHY God has allowed you so much. History will tell. Many have been deceived... and deceived others.

Your friend,

Steve Harbin

Every Christian should read and be aware of this. In 2Tim. 4:3-4 Paul warned "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away
their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths." This warning has never been more true than it is today.

We really need to be aware of this. It is one more dangerous sign of the times we are living in.
This made for interesting reading and how we are so easily deceived. Go to the different web sites listed and it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. All the untruths that are being taught to gullible people. We best be on our toes with our Bibles in our hands to see what is truth and untruth and help people see the real "light." May God help us!

So sad to say, I used to think Oprah knew it all.

Many of you, like me, have probably been Oprah fans for a long time. This is very discouraging news to hear about one who has such tremendous influence on the general public. Please ask God to show Oprah the real Jesus Christ.
Just to make sure this was true, I went on Oprah's website and there it is. The below article is very interesting, so I thought I would share.
MANY OF YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY READ THE BELOW....IT IS THE SUBJECT ABOUT WHICH THE ABOVE LETTER WAS ADDRESSED..........(EXTREMELY WELL, I MIGHT ADD)

"Oprah and Friends" to teach course on New Age Christ

Jesus Christ being reinvented, redefined, and blasphemed and , this false New-
Age Christ teaching is about to make huge inroads into the world, with the help
of the queen of television talk shows, Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah Winfrey, beginning January 1, 2008, on her daily radio program will offer
a year-long course on the New Age Christ, in a lesson a day and completely
cover the 365 lessons from the Course in Miracles "Workbook."

Listeners will be encouraged to buy A Course in Miracles for the year-long
course, and an audio version, recited by Richard (John Boy Walton) Thomas will
be available on compact disc.

Those who finish the Course will have a wholly redefined spiritual mindset-a
New Age worldview that include the beliefs that there is no sin, no evil, no
devil. A Course in Miracles teaches its students to rethink everything they
believe about God and life, and, bluntly states: "This is a course in mind
training" and is dedicated to "thought reversal."

The Course in Miracles - in reality is the truth of the Bible turned upside
down.

Oprah told her television audience that Williamson's book, A Course in Miracles
was one of her favorite books, and that she had already bought a thousand
copies and would be handing them out to everyone in her studio audience.
Oprah's endorsement skyrocketed Williamson's book to the top of the New York
Times bestseller list .

A Course in Miracles is allegedly a "new revelation" from
"Jesus " to help humanity work through these troubled times. This
"Jesus", who bears no doctrinal resemblance to the Bible's Jesus
Christ, began delivering channeled teachings in 1965 to a Columbia University
Professor of Medical Psychology, Helen Schucman.

One day Schucman heard an "inner voice" stating, "This is a
course in miracles. Please take notes." For seven years she diligently
took spiritual dictation from this voice that described himself as
"Jesus."

Here are some quotes from the "Jesus" voice of A Course in Miracles :

"There is no sin . . . "

A "slain Christ has no meaning."

"The journey to the cross should be the last 'useless' journey."

"Do not make the pathetic error of clinging to the old rugged cross."

"The Name of Jesus Christ as such is but a symbol... It is a symbol that
is safely used as a replacement for the many names of all the gods to which you
pray."

"The recognition of God is the recognition of yourself."

"The Atonement is the final lesson he [man] need learn, for it teaches him
that, never having sinned, he has no need of salvation."

2 Timothy 3 (King James Version)

King James Version (KJV)

2 Timothy 3

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent,
fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn
away.

Christians.....Take heed!!

And PLEASE pass this one on.....if you never forward anything else!

Remember Me

We all go though hard times. If you are not in a struggle now you will be in one. It is easy to lose hope.

This week Joseph is in prison. He is in charge of the king's cup-bearer and baker who were sentenced with a crime. Both have dreams and Joseph interrupts these dreams with God's help. One of these men is restored to his position with the king, the other one is not so lucky. In the excitement of freedom, Joseph was forgotten and left in prison. Joseph never lost hope.

How can we not lose hope during a struggle ?

How can we always remember who should get the glory ?

As I write this, David and Candy are bringing Matt home. Praise God for answered prayers!!!! It would have been easy to lose hope but they did not. God has a plan. He had a plan for Joseph and He has a plan for the Kelly's. Let's be a class and a church who remembers that God is in control.

Our Pastor's Dad

Brother Frank's dad pasted away last night. I do not know the details yet. Let's keep him and his family in our prayers.

It was 14 years ago I started driving Shelby to school. It started with preschool then we moved elementary. Later we added Gracie to the carpool. This week Shelby started driving herself and I must say I am having a hard time dealing with it. As my girls get older, I find myself thinking of the day they go off to college or get married. Have I done all I could to prepare them ? What bumps in the road will they face ? How can I be there for them ?

God I pray that I have done a good job as a dad !!!!!!!

Reach Out To Him

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?

His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience because each lad must come into manhood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night, the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm. We, too, are never alone. Even when we don't know it, our Heavenly Father is watching over us, sitting on the stump beside us. When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him.

Prayer Request

Several of you have called me lately with things going on in your lives. It is hard as a Sunday School teacher to see my friends burdened with problems. From time to time we each have bridges we must cross and God always holds our hand. Let us hold each other up in prayer as we struggle down life's path. My door is always open. I love each of you !!!!

Close To The Edge

We all have our weak moments. We all are tempted by sin. Our hope is that we are stronger than the temptation.

This week we are going to see that Joseph refused the strong temptation of sex. " His master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, 'Come to bed with me!' but he refused " Wow, what a temptation for a young single man. His refusal of sex even landed him in prison. His choice to do right got into a mess with his boss. How many times do we have choices in our lives ? Do we get too close to the edge ?

How did Joseph handle this injustice in his life ?

What gave Joseph the power to remain determined in his walk with God ?

How could God let this happen ?

Sex is a wonderful blessing giving by God. It is also a powerful tool used by satan to tempt us into sinning. Let's don't get too close to the edge.

Family Night

I Hate You !!!

I Hate You !!! Have you ever heard those words ? They are strong and hurt. Someone not too long ago told me that they hated me. Those words hurt me. Just to hear that you are hated by someone can effect your christian walk around that person.

This week we are going to look at the hate that Joseph's brothers had for him. That hate would lead to Joseph being harmed at the hands of his brothers. It would be hard to understand what Joseph had to deal with knowing that his brothers disliked him so strongly.

What decisions have you had to make that seemed to result in adversity no matter what you decided ?

How do you handle those times when doing what is right means others might hate you ?

What helps you focus on carrying out your duty in midst of people who dislike you ?
Let's pray for each other.

A Renewal

Spring is here and I am glad. I do enjoy the longer and warmer days. Jeana's flowers are trying to wake-up from a " long winter's nap". The grass in the pastures started to get green and the cows are happy to graze once again. I am ready for this renewal.
This week we will see that Jacob is ready for a renewal in his relationship with God. He has witnessed some negative actions of his family. " You have brought trouble on me" is what Jacob tells his sons. Sometime I can relate to that.

How can you manage the negative fallout caused by any misconduct of your family or friends ?

Why is it important to renew our relationship with God ?

What actions can we take to draw closer to the Lord ?

See you in class.

Gone Home

Ellis' dad Mr. Tillman White went home to be with the Lord today March 26 2008. The arrangements are as follows :

Visitation - Friday evening 5:00 - 7:00 PM Forest Hill on Whitten Road
Funeral Service - Saturday 1:00 PM St. Francis of Assisi on Germantown Parkway

I knew Tillman only a short time but in that short time I grew to love him like a dad myself. He always had a smile on his face. Just think of the smile he has now as he has touched the Master's hand. What joy that must be !!!!!!!

Join me as we remember the White's in their loss.

" Put Your Finger Here "

There were many possibilities for the empty tomb. One, tomb robbers could have stolen Jesus' body. The local authorities put forth that possibility. They bribed false witnesses to put out the word that Jesus' friends had taken His body from the tomb. ( Matt. 28 : 11-15 )
Another possibility was that Jesus' enemies could have removed His body. Mary immediately theorized that Jesus' body had been removed.
Only when Jesus appeared alive did the possibility of the resurrection occur to His followers and then some did not believe. They had to see and touch Jesus in order to believe.
Thomas was one who had to see and touch for himself in order to believe. After he saw, Thomas said to Him " My Lord and my God!"
To be able to touch the nailed scared hands of Jesus, what a joy it must have been for Thomas. We will get to touch the nailed scared hands of Jesus one day. For many of us we have family that has gone home to be with the Lord and they have touched the Master's hand.
What will you say when you touch the hand of Jesus ?
Happy Easter and I will see you in Sunday School.

Crisis Management

When is the last time you had a crisis ? We worry, lose sleep, can't eat and our relationship with others suffer. Most of the time this crisis passes and everything was ok. A crisis bring opportunities for spiritual growth.

This week we will see Jacob in a crisis. He is to meet his brother Esau. As you may remember Jacob tricked his brother out of his birth right and blessing. The last information Jacob had of Esau was that Esau wanted to kill him. This is a meeting Jacob is not looking forward to and I don't blame him. What would you do?

What is a healthy response to a life crisis ?

Have you ever been tempted to give up on God because the crisis of life seemed unending?

Have you ever felt comfortable being totally honest with God in prayer, even acknowledging your deepest fears ?

God promises He will never leave or forsake His children. Let's thank God for being with us when we face our fears.

See you in Sunday School !

God's Faithfulness

We often talk about our faithfulness to God. I know my faithfulness is weak sometimes. How often do we think of God's faithfulness to us ? God is faithful to us in all circumstances inspite of our faithfulness.

This week we are going to look at God's faithfulness to Jacob in times of hardships. Laban took advantage his nephew's Jacob in Jacob's quest for a wife.

How can we thank God for His faithfulness to us even when we are victims of other's deceit ?

How can we thank God for His faithfulness to us even when others are hostile towards us ?

How can we thank God for His faithfulness to us when others cause us undue hardships ?

Continue to pray for the Kelley's and Dr Frank.

I love you and will see you in SS

A Great Time !!!

I think you who came to the fish fry would agree with me when I say we had a great time. Thank you to all of our class who worked to make this a wonderful night for our church.
We were able to say thank you to Bro. Granville and welcome to Bro Frank. I am excited to see what God has prepared for us.
As Stan said Sunday we are preparing for a family night at the gym. Be thinking of a good date for you and your family.
Thank you for your support and love.

To Believe or Not To Believe, That Is the Question

As I studied this week's lesson, I tried to remember the times in my life where I thought I had faith but I struggled with a trust that God was leading me in the right direction. Looking back, the belief that God was with me was not as strong as it should have been. God has never abandoned me !!!

This week we will see not only did Jacob have faith in God, he believed God would bless him. He had faith God would send him in the right direction. Jacob set a stone as a marker of that faith.
When is the last time you set a marker of faith ?

How can we demonstrate faith in God when He has directed us to make a change in our life ?

How can we communicate that faith to others who may struggle with their faith ?
May God bless you this week.

What's Your Price ?

Human beings seem to have the capacity to take advantage of others, especially the weak. Too often the strong exploit the vulnerable and unwary at a costly price. As we will see the Bible denounces such actions.

As we study this week's lesson, we will see how Jacob took advantage of his brother Esau and his father Isaac. Both were in a weak position. Esau was tired and hungry and Isaac was old and almost blind. Jacob sinned against his father and brother, however God's blessed Jacob "the deceiver".

Why did God bless this deception ?

How does God want us to relate to others ?

Have you ever seen someone take advantage of the weak ? Sadly the world is full of people who will exploit others because of their weakness. God have mercy on them, I hope that I would.

Let's continue to remember David and Candy in your prayers. Don't forget the love offering for this Sunday.

See you in Sunday School !!!!!!!!!!!
